Persistent Air Pollution Post- Diwali In Pune
Even after Diwali is over, Pune's air quality isn't getting better
Pune, November 26, 2023 :
With ongoing air quality concerns, as revealed by recent data from five key monitoring stations across the city , highlighting increased levels of PM2.5 and PM10 particles, suggesting that despite the conclusion of festivities, the air quality is not improving as expected.
The following map give highest AQI, PM2.5, and PM10 recorded from 19th November 2023 to 25th November 2023 for five stations in Pune respectively. AQI shows how clean or dirty the air is, and PM2.5 and PM10 are tiny dust particles in the air.
Through the analysis done on the data collected from the CPCB portal, it is found that the average AQI for the city was 165, falling within the "moderate" category.
The air quality in Thergaon was consistently poor throughout the week, with the highest AQI recorded on November 22 at 189 with PM10 being the prime pollutant. Karve Road generally maintained a better air quality, with the highest AQI of 112 recorded on November 23.
Bhosari faced a rise in pollution on November 22, with PM10 levels dominating the highest AQI of 191.On 19th November, AQI of 176 was recorded at Alandi station with PM2.5 being the prime pollutant and highest level among other locations too.
Pune University saw variations in air quality throughout the week, on November 21, recorded the highest AQI of 157, and PM10 being the prime pollutant over a week.
To summarize, Thergaon, Bhosari, and Alandi faced increased pollution levels at different times during the week, and PM10 was identified as the prime pollutant at many locations. A closer look at the data reveals that PM2.5 and PM10 levels were consistently above the safe limits set by the WHO.
The reason behind higher levels of PM2.5 and PM10 in Pune are due to a number of factors, including vehicular emissions, industrial activity, and metro and building construction dust. While the end of Diwali celebrations may have contributed to a slight decrease in pollution levels, the overall air quality in Pune remains a cause for concern.
Improving air quality in Pune is a critical step towards protecting the health of the city's residents. By working together, individuals, businesses, and the government can make a significant difference in the quality of the air we breathe.
